ROSEVILLE, Calif. -
Despite a team-high 17 points by sophomore Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.), Corban's men's basketball team fell to Golden State Athletic Conference member California Baptist, 92-69, in the opening round of the William Jessup Basketball Tournament on Friday.
Douglas, who joined the Warriors following one season at Treasure Valley Community College, posted a season-high in points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field. After posting a mere four points on 2-for-8 shooting from the field against Northwest Christian on Tuesday, the 6-foot-5 Ontario High School graduate began to show signs of shaking off the dust after taking last season off.
Along with Douglas, sophomore guard/forward Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) added 10 points on 4-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-5 from beyond the 3-point line.
After falling behind quickly to open the game, Corban battled back via the long distance shot and got within 15 points (44-29) at the half. Over the final twenty minutes, the Warriors hung tight with the Lancers despite being out-scored by 8 points (48-40) for the final margin of 23 points.
Sophomore guard Kyle Masten (Salem, Ore.) and junior guard/forward Hannes Gehring (Lake Oswego, Ore.) added 9 points each. Masten, a graduate from nearby Sprague High School, was a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the 3-point line, while Gehring was 3-for-6 from the field.
Douglas, Masten, and Gehring led the Warriors with a combined 9 rebounds, as each player pulled down 3 boards. As a team, the Warriors managed only 18 rebounds, as the designated home team, California Baptist, shot 32-for-57 (56.1%) from the field compared to Corban's 48.0 (24-for-50) field goal percentage.
California Baptist was led by Mark Roussin's game-high 22 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Guard Junior Denson and center Greg Bruckner added 16 and 14 points respectively on a combined 11-for-20 shooting from the field. Denson put together an all-around game with 5 rebounds, 8 assists, and 5 steals. Meanwhile, Bruckner pulled down a game-high 9 rebounds and blocked a game-high 5 shots.
Corban moves its record to 0-2 on the young season, while California Baptist improves to 2-1 overall. The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, November 11th, when they play in the consolation game of the William Jessup Basketball Tournament against a still to determined opponent.
