EUGENE, Ore. -
Four future men's basketball players -- Bryan Martin (Salem, Ore.), Andrew Shipley (Jacksonville, Ore.), Nash Keene (Aumsville, Ore.), and Clay Martin (Aloha, Ore.) -- competed on the opening day of the 1st ever North versus South OACA Gatorade Series at Northwest Christian College.
The day's opening game -- 2A North versus 2A South -- featured a pair of future Warriors going head-to-head with numerous one-on-one match ups during the course of the contest.
The 2A South squad defeated the 2A North team, 116-79, as Corban-bound and Cascade Christian High School senior Shipley led all scorers thanks to an 8-for-13 shooting performance from the field en route to scoring 21 points in 18 minutes of action. Along with Shipley's game-high in points, the 6-foot-1 point guard pulled down six rebounds and handed out a game-high tying four assists while leading eight South players in double digits.
Wearing an opposing uniform, nearby Western Mennonite senior Bryan Martin scored 12 points on 5-for-15 shooting from the field to finish third on the team in scoring. The 6-foot-3 point guard grabbed four rebounds, handed out three assists, and recorded a game-high six steals, including the highlight of the game -- a second half steal following a missed South shot that resulted in a monstrous dunk that got the crowd hyped.
In today's 4A game, future Warrior and current Cascade High School senior Keene led all scorers with a game-high 11 points on 5-for-12 shooting from the field. The 6-foot shooting guard also grabbed three rebounds and handed out two assists, as Keene's North squad defeated the 4A South team, 84-60, in the third of five games played inside the Morse Event Center today at NCC.
The day concluded with the 6A North squad, featuring future Warrior and current Aloha High School senior Clay Martin, against the 6A South Squad. In the day's finale, the North defeated the South, 102-93, as Martin recorded 13 points on 5-for-14 shooting from the field to go along with two rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 22 minutes of action. The 6-foot-1 point guard tied for the team lead in three-point baskets made with a pair of trifectas en route to tying for fourth among all 6A participants in points.
Along with the players competing on the court, current Corban men's and women's golf coach Ron Sisler, who is also the varsity boys' basketball coach at Santiam Christian High School, helped lead the 3A South squad to a come-from-behind victory, 103-102. With nine seconds remaining in the game, Sisler, who was an assistant on the 3A South coaching staff, helped design a play that saw Santiam Christian's Sean Sullivan hit the game-winning 3-pointer at the top of the circle with 0.8 seconds left.
All twelve squads will return to the court on Saturday, June 23rd, at Clackamas Community College for the final day of the 35th annual OACA Gatorade Series. The 2A game will begin at 1:30 p.m. followed by the 3A game at 3:15 p.m., 4A at 5:00 p.m., 5A at 6:45 p.m., and 6A at 8:30 p.m.
