Gehring records game highs in loss to ranked Owls

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Senior Hannes Gehring (Lake Oswego, Ore.) registered game highs of 12 points and seven rebounds, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team ended its season with a loss to the NAIA's No. 4-ranked Oregon Tech, 92-58, Saturday at Danny Miles Court.
Closing out the season for the second time in three years in Klamath Falls, Corban came out and nearly matched its season-low in total points as freshman Clay Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) was the only other Warrior to score in double figures with 10 points.
Senior Ben Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) capped his four-year career scoring nine points, while freshman Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) ended his inaugural collegiate campaign with an identical nine points as the duo combined to shoot 7-for-20 from the field.
Both teams battled back and forth over the game's opening ten-plus minutes as the score was knotted at 22-all following a jumper by OIT's Ryan Beesley with 9:31 remaining. Corban's final lead of the game would come ten seconds earlier than Beesley's jumper when junior Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) converted a lay-up with 9:41 on the clock to give the visiting Warriors a slim two-point lead (22-20). Over the half's final nine-plus minutes, Oregon Tech would push its lead to as much as 18 points (47-29) as Jguwon Hogges capped the first half scoring via a jumper with four seconds left.
In the second half, the host Hustlin' Owls would quickly push their lead to 30 points (75-45) as Ryan Fiegi converted on an old fashion three-point play with 11:47 left in the contest. Corban fell behind by a game-high 37 points (86-49) following a dunk by OIT's Christian Cavanaugh with 7:43 showing on the clock. The Warriors would settle for the final margin of 34 points (92-58), as junior Garrett Kauffman (Sweet Home, Ore.) scored Corban's final points of the 2007-08 season via a free throw with just over two minutes remaining.
Along with the aforementioned quartet, Braun, senior Joey Jackson (Creswell, Ore.), and sophomore Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.) added 5, 4, and 4 points respectively. Jackson's point performance was a career-high, as the 6-foot-5 senior forward turned in a performance of 2-for-6 from the field that went along with a career-high tying one steal. Braun, Martin, and Sisler aided Gehring's rebounding effort with 4, 3, and 3 boards respectively, while Martin handed out a team-high four assists and registered a team-best three steals.
Oregon Tech was led by Fiegi, who tallied a game-high 25 points on 9-for-17 shooting from the field to go along with a 1-for-3 showing from beyond the arc and a 6-for-8 performance at the free throw line. Meanwhile, Josh Wetzler, Brent Johnson, Cavanaugh, and Hogges added 14, 14, 13, and 10 points respectively while Fiegi pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds en route to recording a double-double in his final regular season game in front of the OIT faithful.
As a team, Corban shot 24-for-70 (34.3%) from the field including 4-for-23 (17.4%) from beyond the arc and 6-for-11 (54.5%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Oregon Tech turned in a 40-for-74 (54.1%) performance from the field that included a 2-for-13 (15.4%) showing from three-point land and a 10-for-15 (66.7%) showing from the charity stripe.
With the loss, Corban ends its season at 10-20 overall, 5-15 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Oregon Tech improves to 25-5 overall, 16-4 in CCC action en route to capturing the No. 2-seed in the upcoming conference post-season tournament.
