ASHLAND, Ore. – Four players scored in double figures led by sophomore Paul Martin's (Beaverton, Ore.) 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field, as Corban's men's basketball team fell, 91-74, to the Red Raiders of Southern Oregon Friday inside McNeal Pavilion.
In its next-to-last game of the regular season, Corban got 11 points each from senior Ben Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) and junior Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) to go along with 10 points by senior Hannes Gehring (Lake Oswego, Ore.).
In the opening half, the visiting Warriors scored the first four points en route to capturing a quick 4-0 advantage behind back-to-back free throws by freshman Clay Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) and a lay-up by Gehring with 19:41 remaining. Unfortunately for Corban, its lead would not last long as Southern Oregon used a 5-0 run over a span of 42 seconds to take its first lead of the contest (5-4). The host Red Raiders would capture the lead less than a minute into the game and never relinquish it, as SOU pushed its first half advantage to as much as 16 points (48-32) following back-to-back-to-back free throws by Matt Cowell with 2:59 showing on the clock. Over the opening half's final three minutes, Corban would outscore its opponent 9-0 en route to heading into the locker room trailing by a mere seven points (48-41) as Paul Martin provided six of the Warriors' nine points before the halftime buzzer sounded.
In the second half, the host Red Raiders would push their lead to 17 points (61-44) in the opening 4:05 via a 13-3 run. Over the game's final twenty minutes, the closest that Corban would get was 11 points (75-64) following a jumper by freshman Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) with 10:31 showing on the clock. Southern Oregon would hold a double digit lead for most of the second half, including the final margin of 17 points (91-74) following a three-pointer by Nate Rooney in the game's final 30 seconds.
Along with the aforementioned quartet, Logan added eight points off the bench and Clay Martin chipped in with seven. On the boards, Paul Martin and Gehring pulled down a team-high five rebounds each to go along with Clay Martin and Douglas' four boards each.
Southern Oregon was led by Cowell, who tallied a game and team-high 18 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field (all from long distance) to go along with a perfect 6-for-6 performance at the free throw line. Meanwhile, Josh McDermott added 17 points while a trio of Red Raiders -- Rooney, Eli Thornton, and Ryon Pool -- added 12 points each. Rooney grabbed a game and team-high nine rebounds, while Pool and McDermott pulled down five and four boards respectively.
As a team, Corban shot 28-for-64 (43.8%) from the field including 6-for-17 (35.3%) from beyond the arc and 12-for-17 (70.6%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Southern Oregon turned in a 35-for-61 (57.4%) performance from the field that included a 10-for-23 (43.5%) showing from three-point land and an 11-for-16 (68.8%) showing from the charity stripe.
With the loss, Corban falls to 10-19 overall, 5-14 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon improves to 9-20 overall, 5-14 in CCC action. The Warriors will hit the hardwood for the final time this season on Saturday, February 23rd, when Corban travels to Klamath Falls to take on the NAIA's No. 4-ranked Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech beginning at 7:30 p.m.
