PORTLAND, Ore. -
Junior Hannes Gehring (Lake Oswego, Ore.) scored a career-high 26 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field and 7-for-11 from the free throw line, as Corban's men's basketball team fell to the NAIA's No. 5-ranked Knights of Warner Pacific, 101-71, on Saturday.
One week earlier, Gehring set a new career high when the 6-foot-3 guard scored 25 points in a double overtime loss to the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College. Tonight against a nationally-ranked opponent, Gehring began the game a perfect 6-for-6 from the field before ending with an 80.0% (8-for-10) performance to go along with his career and game-high 11 rebounds.
Corban opened the game shooting 13-for-25 (52.0%) from the field, but could not overcome Warner Pacific's advantage in made field goals (19-to-13) en route to trailing by 11 points (44-33) at intermission. In the final twenty minutes, Corban went ice cold from the field as the visiting Warriors shot 12-for-37 (32.4%) compared to a hot shooting Warner Pacific squad that turned in a 51.4% (19-for-37) second half performance en route to securing its second straight 30-point win over the Warriors.
Coming off a hard-fought 7-point win (86-81) over the Thunderbirds of Cascade last night, the Warriors hung with their nationally-ranked opponents for the first twenty minutes before the host Knights took control of the game.
Along with Gehring's career and team-high point total, sophomore Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.), junior J.D. Hill (Lebanon, Ore.), and freshman Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.) added 16, 8, and 7 points respectively, while Hill and Douglas aided Gehring's rebounding effort with 8 and 6 boards respectively.
Gehring has sparked the Warrior offense over the past four games thanks to scoring a combined 81 points (avg. 20.3), including a 26 and 25-point performance in a span of exactly seven days. Meanwhile, Douglas pushes his streak of 10-or-more points to nine of his last ten games, including a career-high 32 points versus nationally-ranked Albertson College of Idaho on January 19th.
As a team, Corban shot 25-for-62 (40.3%) from the field, including a 15-for-22 (68.2%) performance at the free throw line. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific shot 39-for-77 (50.6%) from the field, including 17-for-22 (77.3%) from the charity stripe. Each team canned six shots from beyond the 3-point line, as the two squads combined to shoot 12-for-40 (30.0%) from beyond the arc.
Warner Pacific was led by Scott O'Gallagher and Josh Jackson's team-high 22 points each on a combined 17-for-29 shooting from the field, while Tyler Sundby, Jalonta Martin, and Keegan Cook added 10, 9 and 9 points respectively. Shane Stewart pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds for the Knights, while Sebastian Gobba and a pair of Knights -- O'Gallagher and Cook -- grabbed 7 and 5 boards respectively.
With the loss, Corban falls to 4-24 overall, 2-14 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific pushes its winning streak to three games to improve to 23-4 overall, 14-2 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the lovely confines of the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center on Friday, February 16th, when they host the NAIA's No. 7-ranked Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech beginning at 7:30 p.m.
