Douglas leads Warriors to upset of 'Yotes of College of Idaho

CALDWELL, Idaho – Junior Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) recorded game highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds, as Corban's men's basketball team picked up an upset victory over the 'Yotes of The College of Idaho, 72-65, Friday inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
A native of the Treasure Valley, the 6-foot-5 Douglas teamed with freshman Clay Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) and fellow junior Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) as the only Warriors in double figures. The trio combined to score 47 of the Warriors' 72 points, as Martin poured in 17 points and Braun added 11 off the bench to go along with Douglas' game-high in points.
In front of a crowd of 1,800 people, both teams battled back and forth for the opening 11 minutes before the host 'Yotes broke a 12-all tie with a 7-0 run over a span of 2:17 to grab a commanding seven-point advantage (19-12) with 7:45 to go in the opening half. Corban battled back and took a four-point lead (28-24) following a 16-8 run over a span of 6:10 before The College of Idaho scored the half's final bucket with 26 seconds remaining en route to a half time score of 28-all.
In the second half, the host 'Yotes took a three-point lead (35-32) out of the locker room via a 7-4 run over the opening 3:02 before Corban used an 8-0 run to secure a five-point lead (40-35) with 14:41 to go in the contest. Corban built its lead to as much as six points (56-50) with just under seven minutes showing on the game clock. A 5-0 run in just over one minute brought The College of Idaho back within a mere point (56-55) following back-to-back free throws by Josh Owen with 5:32 to go in the game. The host 'Yotes took their final lead of the contest (61-60) following a three-pointer by Bryan Champ with 2:42 remaining. The College of Idaho's lead would not last long as Corban junior Kyle Masten (Salem, Ore.) connected on a three-pointer a mere 20 seconds later that jump started an 8-0 run by the Warriors that was capped by four straight free throws by Braun. Following Braun's performance at the charity stripe, Corban held a 69-61 lead with 73 seconds hanging on the clock. The College of Idaho could not get any closer than five points (70-65), as Corban's 3-for-4 performance at the free throw line over the game's final minute en route to securing the seven-point victory (72-65).
Along with the aforementioned trio, senior Ben Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.), sophomore Paul Martin (Beaverton, Ore.), and a pair of Warriors added 7, 6, and 5 points respectively. Douglas was aided on the boards by senior Hannes Gehring (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Braun, who pulled down 7 and 6 rebounds respectively.
The College of Idaho was led by Champ, who scored a team-high 18 points on 6-for-14 shooting from the field to go along with a 4-for-9 showing from beyond the arc and a perfect 2-for-2 performance at the free throw line. Meanwhile, Owen added 17 points and J.R. Maggard chipped in with 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
As a team, Corban shot 25-for-61 (41.0%) from the field including 8-for-28 (28.6%) from beyond the arc and 14-for-19 (73.7%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, The College of Idaho turned in a 20-for-60 (33.3%) performance from the field that included an 8-for-31 (25.8%) showing from three-point land and a 17-for-22 (77.3%) showing from the charity stripe.
With its second win in the past three games, Corban improves to 9-16 overall, 4-11 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, The College of Idaho falls to 11-14 overall, 8-7 in CCC action. The Warriors will hit the hardwood again on Saturday, February 9th, when Corban travels to La Grande for a match up with the NAIA's No. 11-ranked Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the Quinn Coliseum.
