SALEM, Ore. -
Sophomore Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) scored a game-high 27 points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team fell in double overtime, 94-93, to the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College on Saturday.
Corban came out of the gate on fire and grabbed an early six-point advantage (8-2) thanks to three lay-ups by junior Hannes Gehring (Lake Oswego, Ore.) in the first 3:48. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Evergreen used a 10-4 run over a span of 2:23 to knot the game at 12-all with 13:51 on the first half clock. After a David Howard lay-up tied the game for the second time, Evergreen used a 6-0 run in 5:46 to take a 18-12 advantage with 8:15 left in the opening half. Corban fought back and took a one point lead (21-20) thanks to a 9-2 run of its own that was spear-headed by freshman reserve Ryan Johnson's (Valrico, Fla.) four points via a pair of free throws and a driving lay-up with 3:47 on the clock. The score went back-and-forth from there until Evergreen took a slim one-point lead (29-28) with 23 seconds left thanks to a pair of free throws by Marcus Whittaker. With the clock winding down, Gehring knocked down a trifecta from the far wing with two seconds left, as Corban held to a slim two-point lead (31-29) heading into the locker room.
The second half opened with Evergreen's Devon Connor-Green knotting the game for the 6th time (31-31) with a lay-up less than 30 seconds into the final stanza. Corban began to apply the pressure and used a little 5-0 run to take a 36-31 advantage following a 3-point basket by senior Nate Morris (Dufur, Ore.) with 18:36 remaining on the clock. Over the next 4:33, Corban used a 12-9 run to grab its largest lead so far (48-40) following a lay-up by Douglas with 14:03 left. The host Warriors continued to increase their lead and got the advantage to double figures (56-46) with 11:45 on the clock thanks to a 3-pointer by Gehring. Each team traded free throws over the next 2:27 before Evergreen's leading scorer Adam Moore got called for an offensive foul and then received a technical foul for hitting the wall in frustration for his fifth foul of the game. At the point that Moore was lost from the remainder of the contest, Gehring nailed both technical free throws to give Corban an eight-point lead (64-56) with 8:10 left in the second half. Sophomore Kyle Masten (Salem, Ore.) increased the Warriors' lead to 10 points (66-56) with a jumper from the wing before Evergreen's bench received the Geoducks' second technical of the game that afforded Gehring another free opportunity at the line. Following Gehring making 1-out-of-2 free throws, Corban had its largest lead of the contest (67-56) with 7:41 to go. Evergreen lost their third player thanks to the foul-out rule -- Devon Connor-Green & David Howard -- with 4:24 left, as Corban held to a six-point lead (75-69) with just over five minutes to go in the second half. With a never-quit attitude, the visiting Geoducks rode the backs of Whittaker and Greg Shadowvine and used a 8-2 run over a span of 3:22 to knot the game at 77-all with 1:39 on the clock. Douglas gave Corban a slim one-point lead (78-77) thanks to a free throw with 1:11 to go before Whittaker tied the game for the 8th time (78-78) with a free throw. Douglas connected on a pair of free throws with 45 seconds left to give Corban a slim two-point advantage (80-78), but Evergreen got two shots from the charity stripe by Whittaker to tie the game at 80-all. With six seconds left, Evergreen forced Corban junior J.D. Hill (Lebanon, Ore.) into a turnover only to have Hill cut down the site lines of the Geoducks' Jesse Norris, who threw the ball out-of-bounds from just in front of Evergreen's bench with two seconds on the clock. Corban's Morris had a last second effort from three-point land that hit the back iron and caromed off to send the game into extra periods.
In the first overtime period, Morris gave Corban a slim two-point lead (82-80) with a jumper in the paint 29 seconds into the extra stanza. Evergreen's Rahiti Marere hit a jumper with 4:13 left to tie the game for the 10th time at 82-82. The host Warriors used a 6-0 run over a span of 1:53 to take what seemed to be an insurmountable 88-82 lead only to watch as Evergreen's Whittaker hit back-to-back shot from beyond the arc to knot the game for the 11th time at 88-all. Corban's senior Kevin Van Hook (Silverdale, Wash.) had a chance to end the game, but had the ball striped by Evergreen's Lonnie Twitchell as the buzzer sounded to send the game into a second overtime period.
In the second extra frame, a jumper by Evergreen's Lloyd Jackson gave the first advantage of the 4th period to the Geoducks (90-88). Douglas hit a pair of free throws to tie the game for the 12th and final time (90-90) with 4:02 left. Corban senior Brad Reynoso (Salem, Ore.) hit one-of-two free throws before Gehring pushed the Warriors' lead to three points (93-90) via a lay-up with 2:35 to go. A pair of free throws by Evergreen's Marere pulled the visiting Geoducks with a mere point (93-92) with 2:07 remaining before Evergreen's defense stepped up the pressure. Two straight possessions came up empty for Corban, as Morris turned the ball over and missed a three-point attempt with 51 seconds left. Evergreen's Marare converted a lay-up with 25 seconds left to give the visiting Geoducks the lead (94-93). Corban's Gehring missed an attempt from long distance with three seconds left only to have Morris grab the offensive rebound. Despite the effort by Morris, the missed shot by Gehring was heading out of bounds and Morris could only attempt to save the ball with a no-look pass that found the awaiting hands of Evergreen's Twitchell, as the buzzer sounded and allowed Evergreen to escape with the 1-point win (94-93) in double overtime.
Along with Douglas' game-high in points and rebounds, Gehring added a career-high 25 points on 8-for-18 shooting from the field, including a team-best 3-for-8 from beyond the three-point line. Johnson came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field, including a 2-for-5 performance from beyond the arc. Gehring aided Douglas' rebounding effort with 8 boards, while Van Hook and a pair of Warriors -- Reynoso & Morris -- pulled down 5 and 2 rebounds respectively.
As a team, Corban shot 31-for-71 (43.7%) from the field, including an amazing 24-for-33 (72.7%) performance at the free throw line. Meanwhile, Evergreen shot 27-for-61 (44.3%) from the field, including an astonishing 34-for-43 (79.1%) from the charity stripe. The two teams combined to shoot 57 free throws over the final thirty minutes, as Corban attempted 22 shots from the charity stripe and Evergreen went to the free throw line 35 times.
Evergreen was led by Whittaker's team-high 26 points on 7-for-17 shooting from the field, including 3-for-9 from beyond the arc and a 9-for-10 performance at the free throw line. Despite having four-out-of-five starters foul out of the game, Evergreen got 22 points from Moore, 13 from Marere, 11 from Shadowvine, and 10 from Connor-Green. A quartet of Geoducks -- Moore, Whittaker, Connor-Green, and Marere -- led the team with 7 rebounds each, while Norris and Howard added 5 and 4 boards respectively.
With its third loss of the season in overtime, Corban falls to 3-23 overall, 1-13 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Evergreen improves to 8-18 overall, 4-11 in CCC action. The Warriors will hit the road for final time this season when Corban goes head-to-head with the Thunderbirds of Cascade on Friday, February 9th, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Portland.
