SALEM, Ore. -
Senior Nate Morris (Dufur, Ore.) scored a game-high 15 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the field, including a 5-for-9 performance from beyond the arc, as Corban's men's basketball team dropped a 90-61 loss to the NAIA's No. 32-ranked Eagles of Northwest.
Following a convincing win over the Beacons of Northwest Christian last weekend in which sophomore Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) scored a game-high 22 points, grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds, and handed out a game-best 7 assists, the Warriors fell behind early against the Eagles of Northwest and could not recover.
Senior Kevin Van Hook (Silverdale, Wash.) and junior Hannes Gehring (Lake Oswego, Ore.) gave Corban's its lone lead of the game (4-2) with back-to-back lay-ups in the first 2:10 of the game. After that, the visiting Eagles put the pressure on the host Warriors and took a double-digit lead (21-11) thanks to a 19-7 run over a span of 5:54. Northwest continued to apply pressure and extended its lead to as much as 16 points (36-20) following a conventional 3-point play by Aaron Sawyer with 5:09 left on the first half clock. Van Hook and freshman reserve Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.) attempted to single-handedly bring Corban back into the game thanks to a pair of free throws and lay-up off an offensive rebound. Unfortunately, Corban's nationally-ranked counterparts built their lead back to 15 points (45-30) following a pair of free throws by Stephen Ismael with 1:01 on the clock. A missed three-point attempt by freshman reserve Ryan Johnson (Valrico, Fla.) and an unsuccessful jumper by Potloff handed Northwest a 15-point advantage, as the two teams headed into the locker room.
In the second half, Corban could not get any closer than 14 points (52-38) when Douglas hit a jumper with 14:53 remaining in the game. Northwest grabbed its first 20-point lead (58-38) with 14:05 on the clock via a 3-pointer by Kendrick Holley. The host Warriors attempted to keep Northwest at bay, as Corban held the Eagles' advantage under 20 points for most of the second half. With 3:50 left in the contest, Northwest grabbed its sixth 20-point advantage (79-59) before slowly extending the lead to as much as 29 points (90-61) with 23 seconds remaining. The final margin came as Northwest scored the game's final six points, as three different Eagle players tallied two points.
Along with Morris' team-best in points, Gehring added 12 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the field and tied for the team lead for rebounds with Van Hook, as the duo pulled down 6 boards each. Douglas, Van Hook, and Potloff added 9, 8, and 8 points respectively, while Douglas and senior Brad Reynoso (Salem, Ore.) grabbed 4 and 3 boards respectively.
As a team, Corban shot 23-for-58 (39.7%) from the field, including a 6-for-9 (66.7%) performance from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Northwest shot 33-for-68 (48.5%) from the field, including a perfect 18-for-18 from the charity stripe. The two teams combined to shoot 15-for-40 (37.5%) from beyond the 3-point line, as Corban canned 9 shots from long distance and Northwest connected on six bombs.
Northwest was led by Sawyer's game-high 24 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the field, while Holley, Ismael, and Chris Keller added 22, 19, and 11 points respectively. Ismael pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, while Sawyer grabbed 9 boards, including 6 offensive rebounds.
With the loss, Corban falls to 3-22 overall, 1-12 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest improves to 19-7 overall, 9-5 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the court tomorrow night (February 3rd) when they host the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center on Corban's campus.
