Sophomore duo's point total not enough in loss to Concordia

PORTLAND, Ore. - Sophomores Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) and Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) combined to score 25 points on a combined 11-for-20 shooting from the field, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team fell, 72-68, to the Cavaliers of Concordia on Friday.
Despite an opening jumper by Douglas 61 seconds into the game that gave Corban its first lead of the night (2-0), Concordia used a 7-0 run to take an early advantage. The host Cavaliers continued to apply pressure and extended their first half lead to as much as 14 points (25-11) thanks to a jumper by Matt Ochs with 12:59 remaining in the opening stanza. Even though Corban went on an 11-0 run over a span of 1:42, Concordia rebuilt its lead to 11 points (35-24) with a 10-4 run of its own. For the second time in the opening half, the visiting Warriors used another 11-0 run to knot the game for the second time (35-35) and then outscored their opponents, 6-2,over the final 4:35 to take a 4-point advantage (41-37) into the locker room.
In the opening seconds of the final stanza, senior Kevin Van Hook (Silverdale, Wash.) gave Corban a quick 7-point lead (44-37) with a 3-pointer. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Concordia put together a quick 8-0 run in a span of 2:10 to take a 1-point lead (45-44) with 17:25 remaining in the game. Each team traded leads over the next thirteen minutes with Concordia grabbing the largest advantage (60-53) with 9:01 on the clock. With just over four-and-a-half minutes to go in the game, the contest was knotted for the sixth time at 63-all. Concordia used a 4-0 run to grab a 67-63 lead before Corban got a 3-point bucket from Braun to get within a mere point (67-66) with 2:31 left. Concordia's Ernie Rama quickly put the host team up by three points (69-66) with a jumper before Douglas brought the Warriors back within a point (69-68) less than ten seconds after Braun's bomb from long distance. Cavalier point guard Jesse Alvarez nailed a jumper with 1:56 left to put Concordia up by three points (71-68) before Corban fell victim to a pair of missed free throws by Douglas and an offensive rebound by Concordia's Alex Hartman with 15 seconds remaining off a missed free throw. Hartman nailed one-out-of-two free throws to seal the win for Concordia by the final margin of 4 points (72-68).
Along with Douglas' team-high 14 points and Braun's 11 points, junior Hannes Gehring (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and senior Nate Morris (Dufur, Ore.) added 11 and 10 points respectively. Braun led all players with a game-high 10 rebounds, while Gehring and a pair of Warriors -- junior J.D. Hill (Lebanon, Ore.) and sophomore Kyle Masten (Salem, Ore.) -- pulled down 6 and 4 boards respectively.
As a team, Corban shot 25-for-56 (44.6%) from the field, including a 15-for-29 (51.7%) performance in the opening twenty minutes. Meanwhile, Concordia shot 27-for-54 (50.0%) from the field, including 12-for-25 (48.0%) from beyond the 3-point line.
Concordia was led by Rama's game-high 19 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the field, while Hartman, Cody Aker, and Ochs added 17, 12, and 10 points respectively. Aker and Ochs led the Cavaliers with a team-best 7 rebounds each, while Hartman and Alvarez pulled down 5 and 3 boards respectively.
With its fourth straight loss, Corban falls to 2-21 overall, 1-11 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Concordia returns to its winning ways and improves to 13-9 overall, 4-7 in CCC play. The Warriors will take a mini-break from conference action and continue their road trip on Saturday, January 27th, when Corban takes on future Cascade Collegiate Conference member and rival Northwest Christian beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the Morse Event Center in Eugene.
