EUGENE, Ore. – Senior Hannes Gehring (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and freshman Clay Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) scored a team-high 15 points each, but Corban's men's basketball team fell to the Beacons of Northwest Christian, 76-70, in Cascade Collegiate Conference action Friday inside the Morse Event Center.
Martin scored eight points in the opening half, while Gehring was held scoreless on three shot attempts. Over the game's final twenty minutes, Gehring torched the nets on 5-for-6 shooting from the field en route to scoring all of his points in the second half.
Along with Gehring and Martin, juniors Kyle Masten (Salem, Ore.) and Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) registered 10 and 9 points respectively to go along with sophomore Paul Martin's (Beaverton, Ore.) team-high seven rebounds.
Both team fought hard for the game's opening seven-plus minutes with the host Beacons clinging to a slim four-point lead (19-15). Braun got the visiting Warriors within a mere point (19-18) on an old-fashion three-point play with 10:53 remaining in the opening half. Unfortunately for Corban, Northwest Christian used a 13-2 run over a span of 4:22 to build an 11-point lead (31-20) with 6:31 showing on the clock. Corban got back within six points (35-29) via a 9-4 run capped off with a dunk by Braun with 3:03 left in the first half. The host Beacons would score the half's final points via a jumper from Andrew Miller with 54 seconds left, as Northwest Christian took an eight-point advantage (37-29) into the locker room.
In the second half, Corban came out and scored the opening eight points via a pair of jumpers and a free throw by Clay Martin. Clay's older brother, Paul, continued the Warriors' hot start when he netted a three-pointer less than 90 seconds into the final half to knot the game at 37-all with 18:37 remaining. Without hesitation, Northwest Christian used a mini 4-0 run to recapture the lead (41-37) and never looked back as the Beacons extended their lead to as much as nine points (61-52) with 6:16 on the clock. Corban got back within a mere basket (66-64) when senior Ben Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) hit back-to-back free throws with 3:49 left in the game, but could not get any closer as NCC went 5-for-6 at the free throw line over the final 41 seconds to wrap up the six-point victory (76-70).
Along with the aforementioned quartet's scoring, Paul Martin and junior Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) added eight and seven points respectively. Meanwhile, Braun, Clay Martin, and Douglas aided Paul Martin's efforts on the boards as the trio grabbed six rebounds each.
Northwest Christian was led by Josh Jarrett, who scored a game-high 22 points on 10-for-17 shooting from the field to go along with a perfect 2-for-2 performance at the free throw line. Meanwhile, Andrew Williams and Miller added 13 and 9 points respectively with Jarrett pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds.
As a team, Corban shot 25-for-66 (37.9%) from the field including 9-for-23 (39.1%) from beyond the arc and 11-for-19 (57.9%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Northwest Christian turned in a 29-for-67 (43.3%) performance from the field that included a 4-for-12 (33.3%) showing from three-point land and a 14-for-16 (87.5%) showing from the charity stripe.
With the loss, Corban falls to 7-15 overall, 2-10 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian improves to 8-13 overall, 5-6 in CCC action. The Warriors will hit the hardwood again on Friday, February 1st, when Corban hosts Northwest beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
