CALDWELL, Idaho - Sophomore Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) scored a career and game-high 32 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team fell to the NAIA's No. 9-ranked Coyotes of Albertson, 95-87, on Friday.
In front of nearly 300 family and friends from nearby Ontario, Oregon, Douglas shot 14-for-17 from the field and grabbed 11 rebounds, including five offensive, in a team-best 37 minutes of action.
Douglas and senior Kevin Van Hook (Silverdale, Wash.) helped give Corban its first lead of the game (5-4) with a jumper and a 3-pointer just over one minute into the game. Douglas gave the Warriors their second lead of the contest (9-8) with another jumper with 16:05 remaining in the opening half before Corban used a 7-0 run in a span of 1:25 to secure its largest lead of the contest (16-9). Unfortunately for the Warriors that lead did not last long, as Albertson used a 13-6 run of its own to notch the game at 22-all with 10:52 on the clock. Corban grabbed its final lead of the game (36-35) when Van Hook nailed a jumper with 5:37 left in the opening half. Over the final five-plus minutes, the host Coyotes used a 16-2 run en route to taking a 13-point lead (51-38) into intermission.
Despite trailing by double digits at halftime, Corban battled back against their nationally-ranked opponents and got within six points (84-78) with 4:09 left in the game when senior Nate Morris (Dufur, Ore.) connected on his fifth and final 3-point basket of the night. Douglas and Van Hook scored the Warriors' final nine points, as the duo each made a free throw before Van Hook went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line, including three straight after being fouled on a 3-point attempt with 43 seconds remaining. After make one-of-two free throws with 1:43 left in the game, Douglas notched Corban's final three points on a dunk and free throw with one second left for the final margin of eight points (95-87).
Along with Douglas, Morris scored a career-high 21 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field, including 5-for-7 from beyond the 3-point line. Van Hook and sophomore Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) added 10 points each, while junior J.D. Hill (Lebanon, Ore.) and Braun aided Douglas on the boards with 7 and 6 rebounds respectively.
As a team, Corban shot 30-for-56 (53.6%) from the field, including an 18-for-30 (60.0%) performance from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Albertson shot 33-for-70 (47.1%) from the field, including 19-for-28 (67.9%) from the charity stripe. The two teams combined to shoot 19-for-48 (39.6%) from beyond the 3-point line, as Corban nailed nine shots from long distance and Albertson notched double digits with 10 bombs from beyond the arc.
Albertson was led by Ike Stafford's team-high 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field, while four other Coyotes -- Josh Owen, Craig McGee, Brandon Nielsen, and J.R. Maggard -- added 15, 14, 11, and 11 points respectively. McGee and Maggard pulled down a team-best 9 rebounds each, while Bryan Champ and Kurt Nielson grabbed 6 and 4 boards respectively.
With its second straight loss, Corban falls to 2-19 overall, 1-9 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Albertson extends its winning streak to three games and improves to 14-3 overall, 8-2 in CCC play.
