SALEM, Ore. - Junior Hannes Gehring (Lake Oswego, Ore.) scored a career-high 17 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team fell to the NAIA's No. 4-ranked and conference front-runners Warner Pacific, 104-74, on Saturday night.
Corban began the game with a 3-pointer by sophomore Kyle Masten (Salem ,Ore.) that gave the host team its first of two leads during the contest. After falling behind 6-3, sophomore Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) converted on a lay-up via a Masten assist to pull the Warriors within a mere point. Corban then took its second and final lead of the game when junior J.D. Hill (Lebanon, Ore.) knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 16:36 on the clock. Warner Pacific's Jalonta Martin tied the score at 8-all with a lay-up before giving the visiting Knights a slim two-point lead via a break-away dunk off an assist from Scott O'Gallagher. Corban senior Brad Reynoso (Salem, Ore.) tied the game at 10-10 with a jumper on the baseline, as that would be the final time that the game would be dead locked. Pressure defense and a hot shooting streak by Warner Pacific allowed the NAIA's 4th best team to increase its lead to nine points (19-10) thanks to a 9-0 run over a span of less than two minutes. The Knights' Josh Jackson capped the run with a wide-open fast break lay-up with 13:28 to go in the opening stanza. Corban attempted to stay within arm's length, but could not as Warner Pacific used an 18-6 run in 6 minutes and 45 seconds to take its largest lead of the opening half (38-16). The host Warriors cut the half time deficit to 17 points (46-29) thanks to a tip-in by Douglas before Warner Pacific's Jackson hit a jumper with three seconds remaining for an advantage of 19 points (48-29) after the opening twenty minutes.
Sophomore Garrett Kaufmann (Sweet Home, Ore.) opened the second half scoring with a fast-break lay-up less than thirty seconds in off an assist by senior Kevin Van Hook (Silverdale, Wash.). Unfortunately, Warner Pacific continued to apply the pressure and gradually increased its lead to as much as 27 points (91-64) following a jumper in the paint by Tyler Sundby with 5:24 to go in the contest. A three-point bucket by Sundby less than two minutes later pushed the visiting Knights' lead to 29 points (95-66) with 3:59 on the clock. Back-to-back three-pointers by Gehring and sophomore Michael Craig (Scappoose, Ore.) cut into the Knights' mighty lead, only to have the final advantage read 30 points (104-74) thanks to five unanswered points by Warner Pacific's Jaxin Skyward and Aaron Wilkerson to end the game.
Gehring ended the night shooting 62.5% (5-for-8) from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the 3-point line and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Douglas aided Gehring's performance with 16 points and a game-high 7 rebounds, while fellow sophomore Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) and a trio of Warriors -- Masten, Van Hook, and freshman Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.) -- added 9 and 6 points respectively. Braun, Potloff, and Gehring aided Douglas on the boards with 5, 4, and 4 rebounds respectively.
As a team, Corban shot 27-for-65 (41.5%) from the field, including an 11-for-16 (68.8%) performance from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific shot 41-for-75 (54.7%) from the field, including an identical 11-for-16 (68.8%) from the charity stripe.
Warner Pacific was led by O'Gallagher's game-high 24 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field, as the conference's leading scorer turned in a perfect 2-for-2 showing from beyond the 3-point line and a 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line. O'Gallagher was aided by the Knights' Martin, Jackson, and Skyward, who poured in 16, 14, and 12 points respectively. Martin and Patrick Oury tied with a game-high 7 rebounds each, while O'Gallagher grabbed 6 boards and handed out a game-high 6 assists.
With the loss, Corban falls to 2-18 overall, 1-8 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific extends its winning streak to seven games and improves to 17-2 overall, 9-0 in CCC play. The Warriors will hit the road for the next four games beginning next Friday, January 19th, against the NAIA's No. 14-ranked Coyotes of Albertson beginning at 7:30 p.m. (MST) in Caldwell, Idaho.
