PORTLAND, Ore. – Under very rainy and cold conditions, Corban's men's and women's golf teams went from within striking distance of the Cavaliers of Concordia to out of the hunt in eighteen holes at Heron Lakes Golf Course on Tuesday.
After the first round of the Concordia Fall Finisher, the Warriors were within 37 strokes of the host Cavaliers, who shot an opening round 2-over 290 as a team. Freshman Nicholas Schroeder (Silverton, Ore.) began with an opening round of 4-over 76 on the Green Back course and was a mere seven shots back of the first round leader, while junior Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) carted a 6-over 78.
On Day #2, very heavy rains and windy conditions made the front nine play longer than the listed 3,481 yards. Once the rains stopped and the sun began shining, the back nine seemed a little easier, but the course still jumped up to bite some of the Warrior players down the stretch.
Schroeder paced the Warriors with a 14-over 86 that included one birdie, eight bogeys, two double bogeys, and one triple bogey. The 6-foot-1 first-year player recorded his lone birdie on the 168-yard 4th hole. Schroeder went out in 5-over 41, but struggled over the next four holes shooting 6-over and then rebounded by parring two of his final five holes and came in at 9-over 45 for an eighteen hole score of 86.
Douglas struggled to help Schroeder, while carting a 18-over 90. The Treasure Valley Community College transfer began his round with a double bogey, but came back with an amazing chip-in birdie of the 515-yard 2nd hole. After being just off the front of the green, Douglas flopped his chip shot onto the front of the green and watched it roll into the cup for a birdie four. Unfortunately, Douglas bogeyed four of his final seven holes for a front nine score of 6-over 42. On the back nine, Douglas went over par on three of his first five holes and then struggled on his final three holes with back-to-back-to-back sixes for a total of 12-over 48.
Junior Josh Greenslade (Spokane, Wash.) and sophomore Nathan Furumasu (Gladstone, Ore.) turned in the other scores that counted towards the team total with a 31-over 97 and a 33-over 99 respectively. Greenslade registered 14 bogeys, while Furumasu turned in 13 bogeys over the combined 36 holes.
Freshmen Jennifer Talburt (Roseburg, Ore.) played her third round as a member of Corban's women's golf team and was the only player to improve from the first to second round, as Talburt turned in a 39-over 111 on the second day. In the first round, Talburt carded a 42-over 114 as an individual.
Concordia's Marc Arima took medalist honors with back-to-back 2-under 70s for a two-round total of 4-under 140.
As a team, the Warriors ended the dual-match with a two-round total of 123-over 699 and fell to the Cavaliers, who turned in a two-day score of 6-over 582.
Corban will conclude its fall season on Saturday, October 28th, at the Corban Fall Finisher featuring Corban College, Concordia University, and Central Oregon Community College beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Mallard Creek Golf Course in Lebanon.
