Warriors post school-record in first round of CCC #2

RIDGEFIELD, Wash. – Led by sophomore Nicholas Schroeder's (Silverton, Ore.) career-best and school-record 3-under 69, Corban's men's golf team posted a school-record 10-over 298 in the opening round of the second Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament of the season at Tri-Mountain Golf Course.
Less than 24 hours after posting his first-ever hole-in-one, Schroeder went out with a 1-over 38 before posting a 4-under 31 on the back nine. The 6-foot-1 sophomore turned in five birdies on the round, including one on the front nine and four on the back. Schroeder posted back-to-back birdies on the par-5 13th and par-4 14th and book ended his back nine with birdies on the par-4 10th and par-5 18th.
In teaming with Schroeder, seniors Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) and Ben Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) turned in scores of even-par 72 and 1-over 73 respectively. Douglas birdied both final holes on each nine, while Sisler was 2-under through is first nine holes before turning in a double bogey on the par-5 13th and back-to-back bogies on the par-3 15th and par-4 16th. The senior duo capped their opening rounds with identical birdies on the 555-yard par-5 18th hole to give them confidence heading into today's final 18 holes.
Rounding out the scoring for the Warriors was senior Josh Greenslade (Spokane, Wash.), who posted a 12-over 84 in helping give Corban its school-record.
Playing as part of the team, but counting as individuals, were junior Nathan Furumasu (Gladstone, Ore.) and freshman Steve Landis (Gladstone, Ore.). Landis posted a score of 2-over 74, while Furumasu carded a 13-over 85.
After the opening round, Corban trails tournament-leader Concordia by 20 strokes as the host Cavaliers posted a school-record 10-under 278 led by first-round leader Tyler Austin's school-record 8-under 64.
On the women's side, freshman Elizabeth Sherwin (Gresham, Ore.) turned in a team-low 32-over 104 to lead the Warriors to a combined team total of 143-over 431. Along with Sherwin, fellow freshman Emily Stupfel (Salem, Ore.), who was playing her first collegiate tournament ever, carded a 34-over 106 to go along with sophomore Jordon Weldon's (Klamath Falls, Ore.) identical score. Freshman Morgan Bars (Grants Pass, Ore.) rounded out the Warriors' team scoring with a 43-over 115.
After the opening round, Corban trails first-round leader, the University of Victoria, by 110 strokes as the Canadian-based Vikings shot a combined 33-over 321 to lead by one stroke over tournament-host Concordia. The host Cavaliers' Lindsey Aho posted a tournament-low 2-over 74 to lead UVic's Anne Balser by a mere two strokes.
Round #2 tees off at approximately 1:00 p.m. this afternoon, while the third and final round will commence with a 9:00 a.m. shot-gun start on Tuesday, October 16th.
