WILDER, Idaho
– After posting its second straight round of 18-over 306, Corban's men's golf team finished fifth overall at The College of Idaho Invitational Tuesday at River Bend Golf Course led by a tie for third individually by freshman Joey Duwe (Kingston, Wash.).
With a second straight 306-performance, Corban moved into third overall in the final Cascade Collegiate Conference standings behind Concordia and Northwest Christian.
After posting 74-72 in the opening two rounds, Duwe carded a final round total of 2-over 74 to finish tied for third overall with a three-round total of 4-over 220. The first-year player tied with Concordia's Marc Arima, Concordia's Brad Bachman, and Walla Walla Community College's Cameron Whittle.
Along with Duwe, fellow freshman Chris Dudley (Boise, Idaho) improved his first two round scores of 6-over 78 by one stroke finishing with a 5-over 77 in the final round. Dudley's performance was good enough for a tie for 13th individually with a pair of WWCC players -- Joseph Perkins & Derek Stamos -- and Aaron VandeHey of Northwest Nazarene.
After posting an opening round 13-over 85, sophomore Steve Landis (Gladstone, Ore.) continued to improve with a final round score of 6-over 78 after posting the Warriors' second best score of the day with a second round total of 3-over 75. Landis concluded the tournament in a tie for 24th individually with Northwest Christian's Kyle Owens.
Senior Nathan Furumasu (Gladstone, Ore.) made the only move standing-wise for the Warriors on the day climbing from a tie for 36th following the opening two rounds to all alone in 35th place after posting a third and final round total of 5-over 77. Furumasu's final round score was totaled in the overall team score for the first time during the two-day event.
Meanwhile, freshman Michael May (Salem, Ore.) continued his consistent play with a final round score of 10-over 82, which gave him back-to-back-to-back scores in the 80s for the first time in his young collegiate career.
Team-wise, Walla Walla Community College took home the title with a three-round combined score of 19-over 883 after posting a final round score of even-par 288. At the conference level, Concordia grabbed its second straight team title posting a three-round score of 37-over 901 which was 18 strokes better than Northwest Christian. Northwest Nazarene grabbed the fourth spot carding a three-round total of 57-over 921, which bettered Corban by 14 strokes (71-over 935). Treasure Valley Community College finished the tournament with a combined team score of 93-over 947 to grab the sixth spot, which was 13 strokes better than tournament-host The College of Idaho (96-over 960) and 39 strokes ahead of Warner Pacific (114-over 978).
Individually, Northwest Christian's Justin Ahrens went wire-to-wire en route to capturing medalist honors after posting a third and final round score of 1-over 73 that equaled a three-round score of 1-under 215. Ahrens' opening round 4-under 68 catapulted him to the individual crown despite combining to score 3-over over the final two rounds.
Walla Walla Community College's Mike Noreen finished as the runner-up with a combined score of 2-over 218, which was two strokes better than a quartet of players that shot a combined 4-over 220.
Corban's men's golf team will finish out the fall season in a dual match against Northwest Christian on Saturday, October 18th, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell.
