WILDER, Idaho – Senior Ben Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) shot a combined three round total of 6-over 222 to finish alone in fourth place individually, as Corban's men's & women's golf teams concluded the first-ever Cascade Collegiate Conference golf tournament on Tuesday at River Bend Golf Course.
As a team, Corban tied the school record for lowest round with a 17-over 305. Prior to Tuesday's final round, the Warriors posted an identical 17-over 305 last season in the opening round of the NAIA Region I Championships in Christena Lakes, British Columbia.
Heading into the third and final round, Sisler was a mere two shots back of the overnight leader, Northwest Christian's Justin Ahrens. Playing in the final group of the day, Sisler went out and quickly put the pressure on the leader only to falter over the final few holes to turn in the Warriors' second lowest score of the day.
Fellow senior Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) turned in Corban's low round of the day with a 1-over 73 after posting scores of 81 and 77 to begin the three-round event. Sophomore Nicholas Schroeder (Silverton, Ore.) and junior Nathan Furumasu (Gladstone, Ore.) rounded out the Warriors' scoring quartet with scores of 6-over 78 and 7-over 79 respectively.
Senior Josh Greenslade (Spokane, Wash.) and freshman Steve Landis (Gladstone, Ore.) turned in final round scores of 11-over 83 and 10-over 82 respectively, as Landis was playing as an individual for Corban.
In the team totals, Concordia ended the event with a combined three-day total of 39-over 903 to win by eight strokes over NCAA Division II member Northwest Nazarene. NNU carded a team total of 47-over 911 which was 24 strokes better than Corban despite the Warriors' record tying performance in the final round.
Northwest Christian's Justin Ahrens faltered on the 54th and final hole with a bogey to finish as the tournament's co-medalist along with Concordia's Tyler Austin. The duo posted final round scores of 1-over 73 (Ahrens) and even-par 72 (Austin) to earn the first-ever Cascade Collegiate Conference medalist honors.
On the women's side, Corban turned in a three-person final round total of 105-over 321 to sit fourth as a team at the conclusion of the first-ever conference tournament.
Sophomore Jordon Weldon (Klamath Falls, Ore.) turned in the day's best round for Corban with a 32-over 104, while freshmen Elizabeth Sherwin (Gresham, Ore.) and Morgan Bars (Grants Pass, Ore.) ended their first-ever tournament with a scores of 36-over 108 and 37-over 109 respectively. Bars had the best improvement of the trio, as she bettered her second round score by 20 strokes in cold, windy conditions on Tuesday.
Concordia, who was the only team to field a full squad (four or more golfers), won the team title with a combined three-round total of 154-over 1,018. The Cavaliers' Lindsey Aho overcame a three-stroke deficit at the beginning of the final round with a tournament-low 7-over 79 to win medalist honors by five strokes over teammate Amy Esmeier.
All four squads -- Albertson, Concordia, Corban, and Northwest Christian -- will go to battle one more time this fall when the teams meet in the second Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament of the season on Monday & Tuesday, October 15th & 16th, at Tri-Mountain Golf Course in Vancouver, Washington.
