SALEM, Ore. -
Third-year head men's golf coach Ron Sisler announced today the signing of the program's first-ever foreign player Maximilian Schleier (Stadtbergen, Germany) and first-ever early signee Joey Duwe (Kingston, Wash.), who will tee it up for the Warriors in the upcoming seasons.
Schleier will be arriving on campus this fall and will be competing for the Warriors during the upcoming 2007-08 season. Duwe is beginning his senior year at North Kitsap High School in 2007-08 and will come to the Capitol City for the 2008-09 season.
As the program's first-ever foreign born player, Schleier is ranked among the top 50 players in Germany and #4 in the state of Bavaria for the age bracket of 19-35. Meanwhile, the 5-foot-6 right-handed player was ranked second in Germany in the under 18 bracket and #1 in the state of Bavaria. The runner-up at the 2006 Bavarian State Championships, Schleier averaged a combined 3.3 strokes above par in a two-year span and shot a career-low 3-under 69 last year. Over the course of two years, Schleier won a combined 21 tournaments and finished as the runner-up on 15 different occasions. A graduate of Holbein Gymnasium, Schleier competed on the European Tour as an amateur in the Augsburg Classic and finished tied for 33rd with a combined three-day total of 8-over 224 (76, 75, 73).
"Max is going to be a great addition to our program," stated Sisler. "As a freshman, he will add a lot to our program due to his international experience as well as his desire to improve each and every time he steps out onto the course."
Duwe, who is the program's first-ever early signee, currently plays golf at North Kitsap High School and has for the past three years. The 5-foot-9 senior team captain and No. 1 ranked player finished 5th in the district with back-to-back scores of 76-75, while concluding the 4A state tournament with an 18th place finish last season. As a junior golfer in 2006, Duwe won a sub-district tournament at Alderbrook Golf Course in Union, Washington, with a 2-under 70 before winning a second sub-district and district title at Gold Mountain Golf Course in Bremerton, Washington, with back-to-back scores of 72 and 74 in 2007. Duwe captured the 2007 WJGA district tournament in Kelso, Washington, last month in a playoff with a combined two-day total of 2-over 146. Joey's older brother, Stephen, is currently attending and playing golf for fellow NAIA member The Master's College in Santa Clarita, California.
“We are excited to add Joey to the roster in 2008,” commented Sisler. “With the amount of talent that we will be losing after (the 2007-08) season, Joey will be a wonderful addition to our team and will help tremendously thanks to his junior golf experience.”
The Warriors are one of four schools that will begin the first year of golf as a conference sport in the Cascade Collegiate Conference and will be competing in a four-tournament conference schedule during the '07 fall and '08 spring seasons.
