Warriors record program-high finishes at NAIA Region I Tournament

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho – Thanks to an 11-over 227 by senior Ben Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) and a 82-over 299 by sophomore Jordon Weldon (Klamath Falls, Ore.), Corban's men's and women's golf team posted program-high finishes at the 2008 NAIA Region I Tournament Tuesday at the Coeur d'Alene Golf Club.
Playing in its fourth regional tournament, the men's program nearly cracked the top five for the first time ever as the Warriors finished 19 strokes behind fellow conference member Concordia in sixth place.
On the other hand, the women's program posted its first-ever team result at the regional tournament as the Warriors finished eighth overall just behind fellow conference member Northwest Christian.
On the men's side, Sisler finished tied for 17th after posting a final round total of 4-over 76. The senior co-captain's combined three round total was 11-over 227 after posting an opening day two-round score of 7-over 151.
Besides Sisler, fellow senior co-captain Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) posted back-to-back scores of 4-over 76 to conclude his final regional tournament. Douglas' three-round total was 15-over 231, which was good for a tie for 27th along with fellow conference competitor Brent McKee of Northwest Christian.
Junior Nathan Furumasu (Gladstone, Ore.), who posted the Warriors' lowest score in the opening round, struggled in the third and final round with a 10-over 82. The Gladstone High School graduate finished the three round event with a combined total of 18-over 234, which was good for a tie for 33rd individually.
Freshman Steve Landis (Gladstone, Ore.) rebounded with back-to-back scores of 5-over 77 after posting a 12-over 84 in the opening round. Landis' three-round total of 22-over 238 was good for 37th overall, which was eight strokes off the program's freshman record at a regional event.
Senior Josh Greenslade (Spokane, Wash.), who was playing in his final event as a Warrior, finished 45th individually after posting back-to-back scores of 12-over 84 after carding an opening round total of 5-over 77.
Team-wise, Corban shot a three-round total of 62-over 926 which was 86 strokes behind the regional champions, the University of British Columbia, who combined to shoot 24-under 840. Individually, UBC's Blake Rowe-Sleeman took home his second regional medalist honors with a three-round total of 12-under 204. Rowe-Sleeman led a trio of Thunderbirds that captured the top three spots, as UBC's Cory Renfrew and David Stewart posted combined scores of 4-under 212 and 3-under 213 respectively.
At the conference level, Sisler tied for medalist honors with Concordia's Marc Arima as Sisler captured his first-ever medalist honors during his four-year career. Concordia captured the first-ever conference tournament team title with a combined three-round total of 43-over 907, which was 19 strokes better than Corban, 41 swings ahead of Northwest Christian (84-over 948), and 110 strokes better than The College of Idaho (153-over 1,017).
Sisler was named to the first-ever All-Cascade Collegiate Conference 1st team, while Douglas earned all-conference 2nd team honors.
On the women's side, Weldon concluded her first-ever regional tournament with a career-low 26-over 98 after posting back-to-back scores of 28-over 100. Weldon's three-round total was good for a 41st place finish individually in leading the Warriors at their first regional tournament.
Along with Weldon, freshman Elizabeth Sherwin (Gresham, Ore.) fired a final round score of 34-over 106 after posting a team-low 22-over 94 in the second round. Sherwin, who was a mere stroke off her own school record in the second round, finished the three-round event with a combined total of 92-over 308 which was good for 46th individually.
Senior Caylin Bankston (La Grande, Ore.) and freshman Emily Stupfel (Salem, Ore.) finished 47th and 48th individually respectively, as the duo shot 95-over 311 and 102-over 318 respectively.
Freshman Morgan Bars (Grants Pass, Ore.) rounded out the Warrior competitors, as she carded a three-round total of 125-over 341 to finish 55th overall.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 369-over 1,233 en route to finishing eighth overall behind wire-to-wire leader, the University of British Columbia who shot a three-round total of 72-over 936. Individually, UBC's Kaitlin Troop was the regional medalist after carding a combined total of 10-over 226 in winning the tournament by seven strokes over fellow T-bird teammate Melissa Core.
At the conference level, Concordia's Lindsay Aho won medalist honors after finishing fifth overall thanks to a combined three-round total of 23-over 239. The Cavaliers won the inaugural conference tournament team title thanks to a combined total of 117-over 981, which was good for third overall in the regional tournament. Northwest Christian finished seventh overall thanks to a combined team score of 301-over 1,165, which was 68 strokes better than Corban.
The Warriors will return to the links next season, as the second full season of conference events begin on Monday & Tuesday, September 15th & 16th, at Tokatee Golf Club in Blue River, Oregon.
