Sisler & Bankston fire back in Round 2 to lead Warriors

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho – Seniors Ben Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) and Caylin Bankston (La Grande, Ore.) shot opening day totals of 7-over 151 and 53-over 197, as Corban's men's and women's golf teams completed the opening two rounds of the NAIA Region I Tournament Monday at the Coeur d'Alene Golf Club.

Playing the annual season-ending NAIA Region I Tournament with a shot to go to the national tournament, the Warriors played a grueling 36 holes on Monday with occasional high winds and tough pin placements.

After tying for 26th after the opening round thanks to a 5-over 77, Sisler rebounded over the day's final 18 holes and carded a 2-over 74 to conclude the opening day two rounds with a combined 7-over 151 and is now tied for 17th overall.

Besides Sisler, junior Nathan Furumasu (Gladstone, Ore.) fired the second lowest score of his career in the opening round to lead the Warriors with a 4-over 76. In the afternoon round, Furumasu carded a 6-over 78 for a combined Day #1 total of 10-over 154 which is tied for 27th overall.

Senior Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) shot an opening round 7-over 79 before rebounding in the second round with a closing 4-over 76, as he finished Day #1 with a combined 11-over 155 and is tied for 29th individually.

Senior Josh Greenslade (Spokane, Wash.) and freshman Steve Landis (Gladstone, Ore.) traded spots between Round #1 and #2, as the duo acted as "one person" in the scoring column. Greenslade carded an opening round total of 6-over 78 before turning in a second round score of 12-over 84 to sit tied for 41st with a combined score of 18-over 162. Meanwhile, Landis opened his first-ever regional tournament with a 12-over 84 before rebounding in the second round with a 5-over 77 for a combined two-round total of 17-over 161 which is tied for 37th individually.

Team-wise, Corban shot a two-round total of 39-over 615 and trails the opening day leader, the University of British Columbia, by 58 strokes. Individually, UBC's Blake Rowe-Sleeman carded a two-round total of 11-under 133 that included a tournament-low 8-under 64 in the second round and leads the overall tournament by eight strokes heading into Tuesday's third and final round.

At the conference level, Sisler sits tied for third behind Concordia's Marc Arima who carded a two-round total of 4-over 148. Concordia leads the conference contingent with a combined opening day total of 25-over 601, which leads Corban by 14 strokes and Northwest Christian by 28 strokes.

On the women's side, Bankston carded a career-low 25-over 97 in the opening round before coming home with a 28-over 100 for a combined Day #1 total of 53-over 197 and sits 39th overall.

Along with Bankston, sophomore Jordon Weldon (Klamath Falls, Ore.) fired back-to-back 28-over 100s and sits tied for 43rd individually with a combined two-round total of 56-over 200.

Freshman Elizabeth Sherwin (Gresham, Ore.) fired an opening round 36-over 108 before making the team's largest turn-around coming home with a second round score of 22-over 94 for a combined two-round total of 58-over 202 which ranks 46th individually. Sherwin's second round performance was one stroke off her own school record, which was set earlier this season in a dual match against Lewis-Clark State College.

Freshmen Emily Stupfel (Salem, Ore.) and Morgan Bars (Grants Pass, Ore.) rounded out the Warriors' scoring, as the duo shot combined two-round totals of 74-over 218 and 84-over 228 respectively.

As a team, Corban combined to shoot 239-over 815 and sits eighth overall behind clubhouse leader, the University of British Columbia who shot an opening day total of 48-over 624. Individually, UBC's Kaitlin Troop is the leader after carding a 3-over 75 in the opening round and 4-over 76 in the second round for a combined two-round total of 7-over 151 to lead by four strokes.

At the conference level, Concordia's Lindsay Aho sits fifth individually and leads the CCC contingent with a combined two-round total of 15-over 159. The Cavaliers lead the conference team portion of the tournament thanks to a combined team total of 76-over 652, which is good for third overall and 128 strokes better than Northwest Christian.

Both teams will return to the links on Tuesday, April 29th, for the third and final round of the NAIA Region I Tournament at Couer d'Alene Municipal Golf Course in Couer d'Alene, Idaho beginning at 8:00 a.m. with a shot gun start.
