SALEM, Ore. – Junior Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) carded back-to-back 5-over 77s for a total of 10-over 154 to finish 3rd individually, as Corban's men's golf team took 4th place at the annual 36-hole Willamette Invitational at Creekside Golf Course on Monday.
On a rainy, wet, and mucky day in South Salem, 53 golfers and nine teams took to the course for what turned out to be a nine-and-a-half hour round. The day began under cloudy, rain-filled skies before clearing up and showing a little bit of sunshine for approximately three hours before re-opening the skies with constant rain for the remainder of the day.
"I am pleased with the way that our guys played today in such extreme and ugly conditions," said second-year head coach Ron Sisler. "Wade turned in the program's highest finish ever at this event and is beginning to show constant improvement and turn the corner towards regionals at the end of next month."
As a team, Corban finished the first round with a 33-over 321 before combining to score 32-over 320 over the final eighteen holes. The Warriors finsihed the day with a score of 65-over 641 and finished behind tournament champions Pacific (Ore.), who carded a 40-over 616, invitational-host Willamette (56-over 632), and Pacific Lutheran (63-over 639).
Sophomore Nathan Furumasu (Gladstone, Ore.) finished the event 11th individually after turning in scores of 6-over 78 and 7-over 79 for a combined 36-hole total of 13-over 157. Freshman Nicholas Schroeder (Silverton, Ore.) and junior Josh Greenslade (Spokane, Wash.) rounded out Corban's scoring with a 16-over 160 and a 26-over 170 respectively. Schroeder carded back-to-back eighteen hole scores of 8-over 80, while Greenslade struggled a bit on the first eighteen with a 14-over 86 before coming home with a 12-over 84. Freshman Jonathan McGuire (Canby, Ore.), who was playing his first collegiate 36-hole match, finished with a combined score of 36-over 180.
Corban will return to the links on Tuesday, April 3rd, when it takes part in a dual match with NCAA Division III member Pacific (Ore.) at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course in North Plains. The match's start time is still to be determined.
