Sherwin leads Warriors to fourth place after Day #1

HILLSBORO, Ore. – Freshman Elizabeth Sherwin (Gresham, Ore.) shot a season-opening 26-over 99, as Corban's women's golf team opened the 2008 season at the Pacific Invitational Saturday at Meriweather National Golf Course.
Playing on a 6,300-plus yard course, the Warriors managed to end the day in fourth place trailing NCAA Division III member Linfield by 42 strokes heading into the final day of competition.
Along with Sherwin, freshman Emily Stupfel (Salem, Ore.) turned in an opening day performance of 29-over 102 to go along with sophomore Jordon Weldon's (Klamath Falls, Ore.) first round showing of 40-over 113.
Senior Caylin Bankston (La Grande, Ore.) and freshman Morgan Bars (Grants Pass, Ore.) rounded out the Warriors' scoring with scores of 45-over 118 and 58-over 131 respectively. Bankston's score was included in the overall team total, while Bars' 18-hole score went under the tournament's individual performances.
Overall, tournament-host Pacific University took the clubhouse lead after the opening day, as the Boxers fired a combined team total of 76-over 368. Pacific leads George Fox University by nine strokes heading into the second and final round.
Individually, Northwest Christian's Ashley King registered an opening round 12-over 85 which was three strokes better than Pacific's Kelly Hartley and four strokes ahead of George Fox's Brittany Zefkeles.
Corban will return to the links for the second and final round on Sunday, March 9th, for 18 holes at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains.
