Corban to work with NAIA on Katrina Relief Fund

September 28, 2005

SALEM, Ore. – Corban College will be working in conjunction with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina on Friday, September 30th, when the women’s volleyball team hosts fellow Cascade Collegiate Conference member Concordia.

“Warrior athletics gladly partners with the NAIA in assisting the victims of Hurricane Katrina,” said John Nelson, Director of Athletics.  “As a member of the NAIA, it is our desire to help in any way possible.  Athletics is a big part of life and this is a way of showing our support for both the national office and the millions of people affected in the south.”

Both Corban’s Associated Student Body organization and the Warrior Athletic Association have also committed to contributing monies to the fund, Nelson said.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the NAIA has designated the month of October as NAIA Katrina Relief Month in an effort to raise funds to assist member schools affected by this mass tragedy.  The association has requested NAIA colleges and universities from across the country to contribute donations or revenue from ticket sales towards the relief effort.

Nine NAIA member institutions in the Gulf Coast suffered extensive damage to their campuses, according to NAIA President and CEO Steve Baker. Of those nine, five institutions (Dillard University, Xavier University, Southern University-New Orleans and the campuses of William Carey in New Orleans and Mississippi) have cancelled fall classes and are facing extremely difficult rebuilding processes. All proceeds generated from this effort will be distributed to affected schools.

“This is a time when we, the NAIA, can reach out and help those member institutions in need,” Baker said. “I hope each of our schools will join us in this effort to help.”

The cost for Friday night’s Corban-Concordia volleyball match is $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for seniors 60 and over, and $2.00 for students with school ID.  Children 12 and under are allowed free admission.

All monies collected from ticket receipts and donations at Friday’s volleyball match will be designated for the NAIA Katrina Relief Fund.
