SALEM, Ore. -
Sixth-year head coach Norm Berney signed incoming freshman Caleb Goins (Scio, Ore.) and Amy Renfro (Albany, Ore.) to Letters of Intent for both cross country and track, as announced today with the duo competing for the Warriors beginning with the 2008 cross country season.
In the short existence of both cross country and track programs at Corban College, the Warriors have become one of the top teams in the country. On the women's side, Corban has advanced to the NAIA Cross Country Championships each of the last two seasons with current senior Danielle Jordan (Medford, Ore.) turning in the best finish by an individual in program history thanks to her 59th place showing this past season in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Goins, who is a current member of the East Linn Christian Academy cross country and track teams, finished 2nd in the 1500 and 3000 meter races respectively at the 2007 OSAA state track championships. The 5-foot-6 distance runner was also an all-conference selection in the 3000-meter as a junior in 2007.
In cross country, Goins finished third at the 2007 cross country state meet, while winning the district championships as a senior. Goins was also selected as the 2007 Tri-River Conference Runner of the Year, while also earning East Linn Christian Academy's runner of the year award.
Renfro, who also competes as a member of the East Linn Christian Academy cross country and track teams, was named back-to-back East Linn Christian Academy cross country and Tri-River Conference Runner of the Year in 2006 and 2007. The 5-foot-3 senior turned in her best cross country time of 19:19.00 when she finished fourth in the 5K race at the 2007 OSAA state championship.
In track, Renfro finished fifth at the OSAA state championship in the 800-meter with a time of 2:25.00. Renfro also competed in the 800-meter race at the OSAA state championship meet as both a sophomore in 2005 and junior in 2006. Along with her running accomplishments, Renfro also finished fifth in the pole vault at the 2007 OSAA state championship with a height of 7-feet, 6-inches.
"Both Caleb and Amy will be huge additions to our team next season," said Berney. "Both runners bring a lot of experience to our squad and should help lead the Warriors to bigger and better things over the next four years."
Both Goins and Renfro competed in the 2007 Nike Border Clash held this past spring, as members of Team Oregon.
The 2008 cross country season is scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 6th, at the annual Boxer Rebellion hosted by NCAA Division III member Pacific University in Forest Grove beginning at 10:00 a.m.
