Seniors shine in loss to Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - Seniors Brian Nelson (Lebanon, Ore.) and Jesse Gaylord (Portland, Ore.) each drove in a run, but it was not enough as Corban's baseball team dropped the finale of its three-game series with the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech, 7-2, at Leo J. Bocchi Field.
OIT freshman lefty Josh Strom scattered eight hits as Oregon Tech salvaged one victory in the three-game series with Corban on Wednesday morning.
Strom, who was named NAIA National Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 23 for his no-hitter against Simpson University (April 19), was staked to a 4-0 lead after five innings. Tech tallied two runs in the third inning on a triple by Derrick Draper and three consecutive two out singles by Derek Bodeen, Anthony Baca and Ryan Garrett.
The Owls added two more runs in the fifth inning as Bodeen singled Garrett doubled him home before scoring on a Dan Ordonez single.
Corban finally got to Strom for two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore Jamie McGraw (Gaston, Ore.) drew a base on balls, junior Ryan Heil (Medford, Ore.) and Nelson each singled with McGraw scoring and Heil going to third base. Gaylord bounced out scoring Heil to cut the Tech lead in half.
OIT added three insurance runs in the last of the eighth inning as Chris Curtis got his third base hit of the game a triple down the right field line. A second triple down the right field line by pinch hitter Wade Coatney plated Curtis to make it a 5-2 game. The Owls cashed in twice more in the inning with a sacrifice fly a walk to Draper who proceeded to steal second and third and score on a base hit by Jason Mortenson.
Corban's freshman starter and loser Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) was tagged for four runs and 10 hits in six innings.
Draper, Bodeen, Baca and Garrett each had two hits on the day.
With the loss, Corban falls to 10-26 overall, 5-19 in Region I play. Oregon Tech improves to 21-18 overall, 11-12 in Region I action. The Warriors will be next in action on Friday, April 28th, when they host the Coyotes of Albertson in a double header beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
