Senior trio leads Warriors to victory over Concordia

PORTLAND, Ore. – Senior Jordan Emery (Salem, Ore.) pitched a complete-game to go along with RBI singles from seniors Jamie McGraw (Gaston, Ore.) and Scott Flux (Salem, Ore.), as Corban's baseball team picked up a much-needed conference victory over Concordia, 2-1, in a make-up game Tuesday at The Yard.
Playing for the final time on a Tuesday this season due to a rain out earlier this year, the visiting Warriors won its second game in the past three dating back to Saturday's doubleheader with British Columbia.
Concordia got the on the board first in the bottom of the third inning, as Sean Strachan led off the frame with a single up the middle before stealing second. Shawn Turner then sacrificed Strachan over to third via a bunt back to the pitcher before Roberto Reyes roped an RBI single up the middle for the game's opening run.
In the top of the fourth, Corban knotted the score at 1-all when junior Craig Spicer (Vancouver, Wash.) registered a one-out single up the middle. The very next batter -- senior Daniel Flores (San Jose, Calif.) -- advanced everyone one base with a single to left field before Flux drove home the Warriors' first run of the game with a single down the right field line.
After five scoreless frames, Corban came to the plate in the top of the seventh inning as senior Darren Johnson (Vancouver, Wash.) reached via an error by the Cavaliers' short stop. One batter later, McGraw singled to left field to bring Johnson home from second after he advanced ninety feet via a stolen base for the winning run.
Emery, who pitched a complete game, shut down the Cavalier bats over the final three innings en route to recording his fourth victory of the season. The senior right-hander allowed one earned run on four hits to go along with a game-high and career-high tying 10 strikeouts.
Along with McGraw and Flux, Spicer went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Corban offensively. Flores, Johnson, sophomore Mitch Riddle (Pullman, Wash.), and freshman Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.) each registered hits for the Warriors.
Concordia was led offensively by four different Cavaliers that recorded a hit each, while Ben Rue went the distance on the hill allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits to go along with his game-high tying 10 K's.
With the victory, Corban improves to 9-22 overall, 6-12 in NAIA Region I action. Meanwhile, Concordia drops to 11-18 overall, 8-6 in NAIA Region I play. The Warriors are back in action on Friday, April 18th, when Corban travels to Lewiston, Idaho for a single nine-inning game against the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Lewis-Clark State beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Harris Field.
