McGraw registers three hits in twin bill losses to LCSC

LEWISTON, Idaho – Junior Jamie McGraw (Gaston, Ore.) went a combined 3-for-7 with a run scored and the visiting Warriors registered 10 hits in the opener, but Corban's baseball team dropped back-to-back games to the NAIA's No. 1-ranked Warriors of Lewis-Clark State at Harris Field on Saturday.
Lewis-Clark State opened the first game scoring a pair of runs in the first inning before Corban came back to pull within a mere run at 2-1 in the third inning. Following a lead off hit by junior Doug Gausepohl (Murrieta, Calif.), senior Jeremy Frantz (Medford, Ore.) brought sophomore pinch runner Rondie Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.) home for the visiting Warriors' first run of the game.
Following Corban's single run in the third inning, Lewis-Clark State scored ten unanswered runs before the visiting Warriors put their final run on the board in the final inning of the opener. Junior pinch hitter Scott Flux (Salem, Ore.) crossed the plate when fellow junior pinch hitter James Kilcup (Vancouver, Wash.) registered his sixth RBI of the season for the game's final run.
Sophomore starter Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) went the first 6.0 innings for Corban, allowing 9 runs (all earned) on 9 hits, while striking out a pair of Warrior hitters. Sophomore Brandon Wolters (Gresham, Ore.) and freshman Eric Fry (Gold Beach, Ore.) combined to throw the final two innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits and struck out one LCSC batter.
Five Lewis-Clark State pitchers combined to allow 2 runs (1 earned) on 10 hits, while fanning 10 Corban hitters. The host Warriors were led by Beau Mills, who went 4-for-5, including his team-leading 9th home run of the season, with 5 runs batted in.
In the night cap, Corban scored first when McGraw led off the game with a single to left field before advancing to third via a single through the left side by senior Ryan Heil (Medford, Ore.) and a ground out by Frantz before scoring when sophomore Craig Spicer (Vancouver, Wash.) grounded out to third.
Unfortunately for Corban, Lewis-Clark State scored a combined six runs in the first two innings (4 in the first & 2 in the second) and put the game away early, as the host Warriors got a pair of RBIs from Mills and three runs batted in from Jessie Mier in the final game of the a three-game series.
A trio of Lewis-Clark State pitchers combined to throw 7.0 innings, allowing a mere earned run on 5 hits. Meanwhile, Corban's junior starter Jordan Emery (Salem, Ore.) pitched the first 4.0 innings, allowing 6 runs (all earned) on 8 hits before turning the ball over to a trio of relievers -- senior Zeke Clayton (Myrtle Creek, Ore.), sophomore Eric Clifford (Fallon, Nev.), and senior Scott Fitchett (Sandpoint, Idaho) -- for the final two innings.
Senior Brett Timmerman (Medford, Ore.) led the visiting Warriors' bats with a 2-for-3 performance, while McGraw, Heil, and Flux each registered a hit off Lewis-Clark State pitching.
With back-to-back losses, Corban falls to 9-15-1 overall, while Lewis-Clark State improves to 22-2 on the season. The Warriors return to action on Tuesday, March 27th, when they travel north to Hillsboro for a rematch with NCAA Division III member Pacific (Ore.) beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Hillsboro Stadium.
