Gaylord clubs pair of doubles in loss to ‘Yotes of Albertson

Senior Jesse Gaylord had a big day at the plate with three hits, a run scored, two doubles and an RBI.

CALDWELL, Idaho – Senior Jesse Gaylord (Portland, Ore.) roughed up Coyote pitching with 3 hits and 1 RBI, but host Albertson exploded for 19 hits and an 8-run eighth-inning to hand the visiting Corban Warriors their third loss in four days, 17-7, at Simplot Stadium.

After giving up 17 unanswered runs to the ‘Yotes through eight innings, the visitors erupted for 7 runs as sophomore Jamie McGraw (Gaston, Ore.) had 2 hits and a pair of runs batted in to lead the late charge.  Junior Brett Timmerman (Medford, Ore.) also knocked in 2 runs on a single, while junior Jeremy Frantz (Medford, Ore.) and Gaylord both registered run-scoring hits for the Warriors.

n the day, Gaylord laced a pair of doubles, scored a run to go with his RBI, and finished the afternoon 3-for-5 at the plate. McGraw was 3-for-6 with a run scored to go with his 2 RBIs.  Sophomore Darren Johnson (Vancouver, Wash.) and Frantz each had a pair of hits on the day for Corban.  Johnson and freshman Rondie Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.) both stole a base for the Warriors.

Albertson jumped on the Warriors’ starting pitcher junior Scott Fitchett for 9 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits through 4.1 innings to gain a commanding lead early. Senior Josh Gaylord (Portland, Ore.) followed Fitchett and went three innings, giving up 10 hits and 8 runs (6 earned) before sophomore Derek Stokes (Anchorage, Alaska) recorded the final two outs  without yielding a run in the 8th.

Albertson’s Bryan Champ racked up 6 RBIs on 2 hits, including his first home run of the season, while Greg Stalling went 4-for-6, with 3 runs scored. Six ‘Yotes had at least two hits and eight players registered at least one RBI.

With the loss, Corban falls to 4-8 overall, 1-4 in NAIA Region I play. Albertson improves to 14-6 overall, 4-4 in regional action.  The same two squads will return to the field for a double header on Saturday, March 18th, beginning at 11:00 a.m. (MST) at Simplot Stadium.
