Frantz homers in Warriors' loss to Bruins of George Fox

March 15, 2006

Junior designated hitter Jeremy Frantz registered a 1-for-3 day with one run scored and 2-runs batted in.

NEWBERG, Ore. – Junior Jeremy Frantz (Medford, Ore.) cracked a 2-run homer, but six George Fox University pitchers combined on a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts and the Bruin offense launched a 16-hit attack in a 14-3 non-conference win over Corban's baseball team Wednesday afternoon at Morse Field.

The contest was originally scheduled as Corban’s home game, but morning rains showers made the Warriors’ diamond unplayable, and the coaches agreed to switch the game to Newberg, where it never did rain.

The Bruins jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning, but the Warriors got two runs in the 4th off Jeff Wheeler on a two-run homer by Frantz, his third of the season, and another run off Nick Bratney in the 5th as senior Brian Nelson (Lebanon, Ore.) singled in sophomore Jamie McGraw (Gaston, Ore.), but Preston Langeliers, Chris Albrecht, and Nick Hedgecock allowed only one Corban hit and two walks while fanning six over the last four innings.

The Bruins scored three in the 1st off sophomore starter Jordan Emery (Salem, Ore.), who suffered his first loss of the season following back-to-back wins. Emery threw 4 innings, giving up 6 hits and 5 runs (3 earned), while striking out 2 batters before giving way to freshman Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) in the fifth.

Five Warriors - Frantz, Nelson, McGraw, junior Brett Timmerman (Medford, Ore.), and senior Jesse Gaylord (Portland, Ore.) - collected one hit apiece off Bruin pitchers. Timmerman's hit was a double leading off the 4th inning, followed by Frantz's dinger.

George Fox's Daniel Downs finished with a 3-5 game with three RBI, while Derrick Jones, Bo Thunell, and Marc Mason had two hits apiece. C.R. Braniff and Jones scored three times each, and Bryan Donohue also had three RBI.

George Fox improved to 9-6 while Corban fell to 4-7.  The Warriors are next in action when they visit Albertson College on Friday, March 17th, for a 3:00 p.m. Cascade Collegiate Conference contest.
