SALEM, Ore. – Senior Brett Timmerman (Medford, Ore.) went a combined 6-for-9 with 4 RBIs and a run scored, as Corban's baseball team picked up a double header split with the Thunderbirds of British Columbia, 4-5 in 11 innings & 10-4, on Friday to secure its first regional win of the season.
Over the past two games, Timmerman has combined to go 9-for-13 at the plate with seven singles, one double, and one triple. The 6-foot left-handed hitting first baseman has driven in six RBIs and scored a pair of runs in the Warriors' last 27 innings.
Game #1 - UBC 5, Corban 4 (11 innings)
In today's opening game of the twin bill with British Columbia, Corban grabbed the early lead (1-0) when junior Darren Johnson (Vancouver, Wash.) singled through the left side scoring senior Jeremy Frantz (Medford, Ore.) from third. Junior starter Jordan Emery (Salem, Ore.) fanned seven of the first eight batters that he faced (4 swinging & 3 looking) before British Columbia tied the game at 1-all in the third inning via single to right field by Nic Lendvoy that scored Brett Murray, who registered the Thunderbirds first hit via a double to left center.
Corban reclaimed the lead in its half of the third inning when Timmerman knocked home both Frantz and fellow senior Ryan Heil (Medford, Ore.) after Heil walked and Frantz roped a double.
Down by a pair of runs, British Columbia tied the game once again in the 4th inning thanks to a 2-RBI double by Ted Wilkie that scored Tyler Willson and Flether Vynne. After the host Warriors grabbed a slim 1-run lead in their half of the fourth, neither team scored until UBC tied the game in the top of the seventh inning via a single to center field by Craig Leebosh that sent the game into extra innings.
For three innings neither team could mount much of an offensive threat until British Columbia got a inning-opening double from Vynne that forced Corban's first-year head coach Nate Mayben to go to the bullpen for the second time. Mayben brought in senior left-handed reliever Zeke Clayton (Myrtle Creek, Ore.), who got a sacrifice bunt from Willson before Wilkie popped out to second. With a lefty on the hill, UBC's tenth-year head coach Terry McKaig brought in pinch hitting right-hander Sean Everest, who promptly hit a laser that ricocheted off Clayton's leg and into left field allowing Vynne to score the game-winning run from third.
UBC's starter Doug Grant opened the game going 7.0 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 10 hits, before giving way to Greg Chong. Chong pitched 3.0 scoreless innings en route to securing his first collegiate victory before Murray finished the final inning getting the Warriors 1-2-3 via a strike out and a pair of ground outs to pick up the first collegiate save of his career.
Corban's Emery went 6.1 innings, allowing 4 runs (all earned) on 6 hits and struck out a game-high 10 T-bird batters. Senior Scott Fitchett (Sandpoint, Idaho) came in to relieve Emery for 3.2 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits and was saddled with the loss, as he gave up the inning-opening double to Vynne in the top of the 11th inning.
Timmerman ended the game 3-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in, while Frantz and Johnson turned in a pair of 2-for-5 performances and combined to score 3 runs. For British Columbia, Vynne finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, while six other T-birds registered a hit.
Game #2 - Corban 10, UBC 4
In the nightcap, Corban got on the board in the first inning via Frantz's first home run of the season -- a opposite field shot that just snuck over the right field wall -- that scored sophomore Rondie Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.).
Trailing by a pair of runs, British Columbia struck for a single run in the 2nd inning and a pair of runs in the 3rd inning via a single to center field by Wilkie in the second stanza and a single by Scott Webster in the third stanza.
Despite being behind by a run, junior Doug Gausepohl (Murrieta, Calif.) erased that deficit with his first home run of the season -- a 2-run shot over the left center field wall -- that handed the host team a 1-run lead (4-3).
British Columbia scored its final run in the top of the 5th inning when Dave Dick grounded out to second, scoring Lendvoy from third and tying the game at 4-all.
In the fifth inning, Corban scored the go-ahead run when Heil hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored freshman Josh Warner (Independence, Ore.) from third, as the 6-foot-2 right-fielder had reached via an error by UBC's short stop to lead off the inning.
British Columbia was held scoreless in the 6th inning before Corban exploded for five runs off three hits to balloon its lead from one run to six runs heading into the final inning. The Warriors batted around the lineup and got hits from Warner (RBI single to left field), Heil (RBI single through the left side), and Timmerman (a 2-RBI single through the right side). Senior Kyle Myers (Canyon City, Ore.) executed his second suicide squeeze of the afternoon that scored the Warriors' first run of the inning and gave the 5-foot-8 right fielder a pair of RBIs on the twin bill.
Sophomore pitcher Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) went the distance for the Warriors, allowing 4 runs (all earned) on 9 hits, while fanning four T-bird batters. UBC's Andrew LaFleur was credited with the loss, as the left-hander pitched 5.1 innings, allowing 8 runs (6 earned) on 9 hits before handing the ball over to Jordan Anderson for the final 0.2 innings.
Despite Timmerman's 3-for-4 performance in the night cap, Frantz and Heil turned in 2-for-3 performances with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Warner ended with a pair of hits, while Taylor and Gausepohl recorded Corban's other hits.
British Columbia was led by Lendvoy and Willson, who each turned in 2-for-4 performance, while Webster knocked in a pair of runs thanks to a 1-for-3 showing at the plate.
With the split, Corban is now 5-10-1 overall on the season, 1-4 in Region I action. Meanwhile, British Columbia finds themselves at 2-6 overall, 1-1 in Region I play. The same two teams will meet tomorrow -- Saturday, March 10th -- in a single game with the first pitch slated to be thrown at 11:00 a.m. on Warrior Field.
