CALDWELL, Idaho – Senior Ryan Heil (Medford, Ore.) knocked in four RBIs as he hit 3-for-6 on the day, but it was not enough as Corban's baseball team fell in a double header to the Coyotes of Albertson College of Idaho on Saturday, 12-4 & 8-6, in the opening weekend of NAIA Region I action for both teams.
Albertson's Pat Burke went 5-for-8 with two doubles and four RBI as the Coyotes' baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Corban today at Simplot Stadium.
After the Warriors opened Game 1 with a first inning run, the 'Yotes responded with a seven-spot to take control. Burke had an RBI single to start the rally, then capped it with a two-run single, as ACI sent 12 men to the plate in the frame.
Carson Taysom gutted out four-plus innings to notch his third win of the year, with Tyler Smith going 2-for-3 with two RBI and Kent Bradshaw going 2-for-3 with three RBI in the win.
Game 2 saw ACI run out to an 8-1 lead after five innings and nearly watch it evaporate. Corban brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Joey Zubizarreta caught sophomore Craig Spicer (Vancouver, Wash.) looking to end the threat. Pat Lyon then worked out of jams in the eighth and ninth innings to log his first career save - as Tim Bourner got the win in the staff start, fanning four in three innings of work.
Burke had three of his hits in the Game 2 win, with Bryan Champ, who will head to the NAIA Division II Basketball Tournament tomorrow, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
With the win, Corban falls to 4-8-1 overall on the season behind first year head coach Nate Mayben. Meanwhile, the 'Yotes, who are 10-2 overall, 3-0 NAIA Region I, extended their overall win streak to six games, and remained perfect at home with an 8-0 mark. The Warriors will return to the field on Tuesday, March 6th, when they take on NCAA Division III member Lewis & Clark beginning at 6:30 p.m. at West Linn High School in West Linn.
