Emery pitches Warriors to conference split with Cavaliers

PORTLAND, Ore. – Sophomore Jordan Emery (Salem ,Ore.) pitched six solid innings in game two and sophomore Jamie McGraw (Gaston, Ore.) went a combined 5-for-10 with 3 runs scored, as Corban’s baseball team earned an opening conference split with Concordia, 5-8 & 14-6, at the Yard.
In the first game, senior Brian Nelson (Lebanon, Ore.) put Corban up with one swing of the bat, as he blasted a 3-run home run over the left field fence in the 1st inning. Junior pitcher Scott Fitchett (Sandpoint, Idaho) allowed only one hit over the first two innings before the host Cavaliers tied the game in the 3rd inning thanks to a walk, a hit by pitch, and a sacrifice fly.
The Warrior re-took the lead in the 5th inning when sophomore Ryan Porter (Keizer, Ore.) registered a grounded out RBI that scored fellow sophomore Darren Johnson (Vancouver, Wash.). Josh Brandt’s 3-run home run in the 5th inning gave Concordia the lead for good, as the host Cavaliers tacked on two more runs in the 6th inning to secure the 8-5 victory.
In game two, Corban jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the 1st inning, as ten batters strolled to the plate and recorded 4 hits led by McGraw’s two. Concordia plated two runs in the 1st inning thanks to a ground out and a single.
Each team scored three runs in the 4th inning, as Corban scored five runs over the final six innings and Concordia crossed the plate only once in the 8th inning for the final score of 14-6.
Fitchett pitched all 6 innings in the first game, allowing 8 runs (all earned) on 6 hits with 6 strikeouts. Emery started the second game and went the first 6 innings, allowing 5 runs (all earned) on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts, before handing the ball over to junior reliever Bryan Bernard (Salem, Ore.). Bernard, making his 5th appearance of the season, allowed 1 run (1 earned) on 2 hits in 3 innings of work.
The Warriors recorded 21 hits on the day, as McGraw led all players with 5 hits, including 3 singles, a double, and a triple. Nelson, Porter, and senior Jesse Gaylord (Portland, Ore.) registered 4, 3, and 3 hits respectively.
With the split, Corban improves to 3-3 overall, 1-1 in NAIA Region I action. Concordia is now 5-4 overall, 1-1 in NAIA Region I play. The Warriors will be next in action on Saturday, March 4th, when they continue their first weekend of conference play with another double header against Concordia beginning at 12:00 p.m. at The Yard in Portland. |
