McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Junior Jeremy Frantz (Medford, Ore.) went 2-for-5 at the plate and hit the first home run of the season, but it was enough as Corban’s baseball team fell to tournament co-host Linfield, 13-6, in the final game at the Yamhill County Spring Classic at Roy Helser Field.
Linfield (3-4) put runs on the board in seven-out-of-eight innings and was held scoreless only in the 3rd inning when junior pitcher Brett Timmerman (Medford, Ore.) got out of a jam that saw the first two Wildcats reach base via walks before the next three got out by means of a strikeout and two pop outs.
Corban (2-2) scored single runs in the 4th, 5th, 8th, and 9th innings, while scoring two runs in the 6th inning.
In the 4th inning, sophomore Darren Johnson (Vancouver, Wash.) walked with the bases loaded to score the Warriors’ first run. Junior Kyle Myers (Canyon City, Ore.) began the next inning with a walk before sophomore Jamie McGraw (Gaston, Ore.) was hit by a pitch. With runners on first and second, senior Brian Nelson (Lebanon, Ore.) singled to center field scoring Myers from second.
Timmerman pitched the first 4-plus innings before handing the ball over the freshman Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.), who was seeing his first action of the season. Timmerman suffered the loss as he allowed 6 runs (all earned) on 7 hits, while striking out 2 Wildcats. Braun and junior Bryan Bernard (Salem, Ore.) combined to pitch the final 4.0 innings, while allowing 7 runs (all earned) on 11 hits.
In the 6th inning, Frantz led off with a solo home run to left field before junior Ryan Heil (Medford, Ore.) and senior Jesse Gaylord (Portland, Ore.) got back-to-back singles. Gaylord’s RBI single came following a stolen base by Heil.
Sophomore Doug Gausepohl (Murrieta, Calif.) knocked in the Warriors’ lone run in the 8th inning via a fielder’s choice that scored Heil. The Warriors’ final run of the afternoon came in the 9th inning when Frantz singled to left field scoring McGraw from second base.
Heil finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored, while Nelson and Gaylord each recorded 2 hits.
Linfield was led by Brett Glover, who went 4-for-5 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBIs, while Josh Guterman pitched 5.0 innings for the win.
Corban is next in action on Friday, March 3rd, when they kick off Cascade Collegiate Conference play with an afternoon double header against Concordia beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Portland.
