REDDING, Calif. -
Seniors Jordan Emery (Salem, Ore.) and Daniel Flores (San Jose, Calif.) pitched the Warriors to a season-opening victory, as Corban's baseball team opened its Northern California road trip with a 4-3 victory over the Redhawks of Simpson University Thursday at Tiger Field.
The Warriors scored three runs in the first inning spearheaded by a Flores triple that scored fellow senior Jamie McGraw (Gaston, Ore.) for Corban's first run of the 2008 season. Flores then came home when fellow senior Scott Flux (Salem, Ore.) reached via an error to make the score 2-0 in favor of the visiting team. Two batters later freshman Taylor Wyatt (Dallas, Ore.) registered his first collegiate hit to bring home Flux and cap Corban's opening inning scoring.
Corban scored again in the top of the third inning, as Flux opened the frame with a double before moving to third on a sacrifice ground out by sophomore Josh Warner (Independence, Ore.). Flux then scored just before fellow senior Darren Johnson (Vancouver, Wash.) was thrown out attempting to steal second after reaching via an error by the Redhawks' catcher.
Emery's masterful performance on the mound included allowing a mere hit over five-plus innings. The 6-foot-3 right-hander allowed a single run in the fifth and another run in the sixth inning before being pulled in favor of Warner.
Warner finished out the sixth inning and kept the Warriors in the lead in the seventh and eighth despite allowing a single Redhawk run in the eighth inning that brought the score to 4-3 in favor of Corban.
Flores then came in the ninth inning and shut the door on Simpson's comeback efforts, as Corban picked up its first victory of the season and third straight against its California Pacific Conference opponent.
With the victory, Emery and the Warriors improve to 1-0 on the young season while Flores picks up the first save of his collegiate career after playing the past three season at The Master's College in Santa Clarita, California. Meanwhile, Simpson drops to 2-7 on the season.
Corban will return to the diamond on Friday, February 15th, when they play against Patten University in Oakland, California beginning at 1:00 p.m.
