Music Student Testimonies

Michelle Howden, class of 2008
When I first came to Corban, I was not a music education major, but I did participate in choir and voice lessons. I have always loved music, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to make it my occupation. As I completed my general education courses my freshman year, I did not feel at peace with my major and felt the Lord tugging me in the direction of music. After praying about this, I changed my major to music education and have been incredibly blessed through this decision.

The music program at Corban College is very unique because the class sizes are smaller than most schools, which gives students more one-on-one attention from their professors. There is a close-knit relationship between the music students, as we learn and grow together as musicians.

We are blessed to have a wonderful music faculty who are very knowledgeable in their subject area.  As professors, they challenge and encourage the students to not only become better musicians, but to also glorify and honor the Lord through our music.

Throughout the past three years of my education, I have been challenged in my knowledge of music in more ways than I thought possible. All of the core classes in the music degree have given me a new understanding and appreciation of music.

Students expand their knowledge through courses such as music theory, history, conducting, composition, and many other classes. They are also encouraged to apply this knowledge through various performance opportunities made available by the music department.

When students come to the Music Department, they will not only be stretched as musicians, but more importantly they will grow in their concept of serving Christ through the gift of music.

"I chose my major because I want to inspire children to be life long learners. I chose Corban because of the obvious focus on Christ. I was impressed by how friendly everyone was (by the way, it's like this every day -- it even gets better when you're a student). I also appreciated the relaxed, yet quality, atmosphere. When I visited, I liked the music the band was working on, liked the band director, and appreciated his desire to glorify God through music. I was also impressed by the qualifications of my private flute teacher.

I have been encouraged and challenged by the professors' commitment to God, sincere interest in their students, and dedication to preparing us the best they can for future careers. During my freshman year I was really stretched by our band director and have become a more confident, skilled musician. We veteran band members will never forget a particular 'frolicking' incident, and Jo and Rayshelle's custom T-shirts, "Drumming is our crime, so we're doing time".

After graduating I see myself as an elementary teacher doing my best to make a difference for Christ in the schools in my community. I hope to be involved in the music ministry at my church, and teach private lessons.

This is an exciting time of growth for the music department as we have new-found stability and direction. The music department is filled with great people. We grow really close in band, and tour is the highlight of my year. There are a lot of opportunities to give solo performances and grow as a musician."
