Prospective Students

Scholarships

Scholarships are available to students whose major field of study is music. Music scholarships are awarded to deserving music majors separately from academic scholarships or need-based awards administered by the Financial Aid Office. Students with strong grades and test scores are generally offered attractive financial aid packages, in which the music scholarship is just one component. Students who are experienced accompanists, those who would be assets to our program in both band and choir, and those who play a less common instrument typically receive the largest scholarships. If a student is not sure whether to major in music, it is appropriate to audition for us and apply for a music scholarship anyway. The student can change his/her mind later.

Participation Awards

Students who plan to choose a major other than music are eligible to receive a participation award. These are not as large as music scholarships, but they offer more flexibility for students. These awards include the requirement to participate in a musical ensemble.

Auditions

Audition for admission to the Music Program is optional, but highly recommended. We prefer that students audition in person, but auditioning by using a video tape is acceptable. Arrangements for your audition need to be made in advance. Auditions are required for music scholarships.

  • Audition dates occur during the Corban Experience

  • Audition Requirements
When you audition for us, we would like for you to perform two selections of different styles. One could be art music, such as a solo appropriate for a statewide solo contest. The other could be worship music appropriate for a church service. Alternatively, one could be classical music and the other could be jazz. Another plan is to choose one composition from the Baroque era and one from the twentieth or twenty-first century. One could be a contemporary worship song and the other a traditional hymn. If you sing and play an instrument or play two different instruments, we would like for you to perform on both. Your audition will be most impressive if you perform from memory. Memorization is more important when you perform in your primary area. (For example, if violin is your primary instrument, you would play the violin from memory and then sing something with the music.)

Of course, you need to know the music thoroughly whether you perform it from memory or not. If your music has an accompaniment, you need to audition with a live accompanist, not a recording. You may bring an accompanist with you or ask us to provide one. In that case, you will need to send us the printed music in advance so our accompanist can be prepared for the best possible performance with you. We may ask you to sight read a short selection at your audition, as well. When you come to audition, allow time to warm up before you perform for us. There are practice rooms in the Music House where you can warm up. You should dress nicely for this audition.
