Computer Science Student Testimonies
Chris Roberts,
class of 2005
"During my senior year in high school, I fell in love with
computers and I decided that Computer Science was what I wanted
to learn more about. After I chose this for my major, the next step
was finding a good college. Well, Corban not only offers
a good CS program, they offer an education that would make me strong
in my walk with God as well. That's what I wanted.
How have the professors influenced me? The professors!! Oh, the professors! The professors are what make Corban such a great place to learn! As a Computer Science major, I have had the pleasure of taking a lot of classes from Professor Straw. He's great! In addition to teaching us about computers, he instructs us on how we as Christians should react to things that are going on in the technical world today. For instance, we all had a nice, long discussion about the RIAA and copyright laws. Great stuff!
On day in class, Professor Straw asked us to get into groups, each group studying a different section of the chapter, and spend five to ten minutes at the end of the class period teaching everybody what we learned. As we studied our sections, one group just could not understand the material and decided that instead of teaching, they would ask the rest of us to get into groups, study the chapter, and explain to everybody what they learned it was pretty funny.
After graduation I see myself at a job I would like to be able to influence others wherever I am working, to show them by my actions who God is and what Christianity is all about. I have loved my time here at Corban. You can learn about computers anywhere, but learning about computer science while building a strong foundation for your Christian faith, that's what happens at Corban College."
Sam Robinson, class of 2005
"I chose the Computer Science major because computers have
always interested me. I knew that I wanted to grow up to do something
with computers, and I figured what better way to get exposed to
a good portion of the different computer fields than to major in
Computer Science? I chose to study CS at Corban because
both of my parents graduated from this college. In addition to that fact,
the CS program at Corban looked good. I have now been in the program
for over two years and it is just getting better and better.
The professors at Corban are just awesome. They are all very nice people if you get to know them. Professor Straw especially has been a great influence. He came in last year and really started to get things done with the Computer Science program. He has really shown me that when I go into something, I need to do my best to excel and push things to a higher level.
One story about class that really sticks out in my mind occurred last year in Computer Organization and Architecture. The class wanted to do something funny to Professor Straw before he came into the classroom. So we took two tables and made a box around the door. We put his podium on one of the tables and then we all sat around them. It was funny to see his reaction when he came in and we were all right there, inside the door, sitting and waiting to learn.
I am not currently involved in an internship. I do, however, work in the Corban Main Computer Lab. The job helps me to realize what the people who do actual tech support have to go through. Also, when I go home over the summers I work at my high school with the Information Technology guys. I have done this for the last three years. It has really helped me to get good computer experience in various fields. I have done everything from running network cable to building a firewall for the new network. It is a great job, and I love working with the other guys in the IT department.
As for where I'll go after graduation, I'm not really sure. I will probably move back to California and look for a computer job down there."
